چکیده

We have studied the effect of the interface structure on the exchange bias in the FeF2-Fe system, for FeF2 bulk single crystals or thin films. The exchange bias depends very strongly on the crystalline orientation of the antiferromagnet for both films and crystals. However, the interface roughness seems to have a strong effect mainly on the film systems. These results indicate that the exchange bias depends strongly on the spin structure at the interface, especially on the angle between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spins. We have also found a strong dependence of the hysteresis loops shape on the cooling field direction with respect to the antiferromagnetic anisotropy axis, induced by a rotation of the ferromagnetic easy axis as the sample is cooled through TN . For the single crystal systems the results imply the existence of a perpendicular coupling between the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spins at low temperatures. @S0163-1829~99!02610-7#

Parallel versus antiparallel interfacial coupling in exchange biased Co/FeF2.

By using the surface and element specificity of soft x-ray magnetic dichroism we provide direct experimental evidence for two different types of interfacial uncompensated Fe moments in exchange biased Co/FeF2 bilayers. Some moments are pinned and coupled antiparallel to the ferromagnet (FM). They give rise to a positive exchange bias and vanish above T(N) = 78 together with the antiferromagnet ...

Exchange bias and asymmetric reversal in nanostructured dot arrays.

The size dependence of exchange bias field HE and coercivity Hc was studied by measuring exchange biased Fe-FeF2 dot arrays in comparison with an unstructured exchange biased Fe-FeF2 bilayer. The domain sizes in the ferromagnet (FM) and the antiferromagnet (AFM) play an important role for exchange bias (EB), and thus interesting phenomena may be expected when the size of an EB system becomes co...

Large exchange bias and its connection to interface structure in FeF2–Fe bilayers

Large exchange bias effects (DE;1.1 erg/cm) were observed in antiferromagnetic ~FeF2) –ferromagnetic ~Fe! bilayers grown on MgO. The FeF2 grows along the spin-compensated ~110! direction. The FeF2–Fe interface roughness was characterized using specular and diffuse x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The magnitude of the exchange bias field HE increases as the interface roughness decr...

Reversal behavior of exchange-biased submicron dots

Nanostructured Fe dots were prepared on antiferromagnetic FeF2 thin films and investigated by magneto-optical Kerr effect sMOKEd. We studied the influence of dot sizes on the magnetic hysteresis and compared the result with both continuous thin film bilayers and nanostructured Fe/FeF2 pillars. Hysteresis loops were measured at temperatures below and above s10 and 90 K, respectivelyd the Néel te...

Perpendicular coupling at Fe–FeF2 interfaces

We have studied the exchange anisotropy of ferromagnetic Fe films grown on antiferromagnetic FeF2 single crystals. The behavior of the hysteresis loops of the Fe above and below the Néel temperature TN of FeF2 indicates a 90° rotation of the ferromagnetic easy axis due to the antiferromagnetic ordering. By examining the Fe hysteresis loops together with the FeF2 susceptibility behavior we infer...
